They do have added features like the shock absorption that adds to the weight
These were the first trekking poles I ever used and in many ways still my favorites. Be aware that by backpacking standards, they are a bit heavy. They do have added features like the shock absorption that adds to the weight. But if you take these on long treks - you will feel them in your arms.I took these on a nearly 2 week 150 miler through some muddy then rocky then muddy again terrain. They performed remarkably well. If you twist close the telescoping sections tight enough they will not collapse on you. I eventually replaced these poles for lighter, carbon fiber ones and still wonder if I made the right decision. Because I really do miss these poles even with their bulk. These have cork grips. Most people prefer that but I tend to like EVA foam. Cork will repel hand sweat better but foam is softer. Over a week or two on the trail I find the latter more important than the former. These poles do come in a cork version though.Another nice thing to know is they will bend but not break. If you fall a carbon fiber pole will most likely snap. This pole, like most aluminum poles will bend. This saved me from going down an embankment once where I could have been much more injured. I credit these poles with saving that trip.

Forged for Life
I bought these trekking poles after suffering from knee pain during a 30 mile backpacking trip in Pennsylvania. I did a lot of research and asked fellow hiking buddies about a good pair of affordable trekking poles and a few mentioned Mountainsmith. I'd have to say I'm very pleased with the Mountainsmith pyrite trekking poles. Lightweight, well build, and easy to use. If you ever have knee or ankle pain while hiking and looking for a good quality trekking pole I highly suggest the Mountainsmith pyrite trekking poles

comfortable grips and straps
comfortable grips and straps. tips are very grippy and durable. One got stuck unlocked but it turns out that is not uncommon with internal locking poles and is a very easy fix (fully extend(past stop) then tighten). When anti-shock is disabled it still has a slight springiness between the neutral state and compressed, but does still provide the benefits of having the optional lock. I found these to be taller than most poles at full extension, which made them nice for setting up as a post for my camping tarp.

Work great. Bought these to hike up Mount St
Work great.Bought these to hike up Mount St. Helens and they performed very well. The baskets don't fit very well, but since I don't plan on using them that wasn't a real issue for me.They do have a tendency to loosen up and change length unexpectedly on you though...

Nice springy poles
Nice springy poles. Used in Rocky Mountain National Park, and at Volcanoes National Park on some pretty tough terrain. The pole held well without collapsing. After about 20 miles, the little rubber things on the bottom wore through, but still functional.

They are quite sturdy and take a solid beating
I purchased these a few months back. They are quite sturdy and take a solid beating. I recently took them up and down Mt Rainier. There were several times where I was leaning on these for support...no buckling. Great investment.
