Description
- Product Info: This plant is a live Passiflora Vine. It is hybrid from P incarnata x P cincinnata and is known by the common name Incense. It is a starter-sized plant with an approximately 4-inch-diameter root zone and will be at least 6 to 8 inches tall and will not have blooms or buds on arrival. Starter-size plants are intended for a gardener to plant and grow to their finished mature size.
- Flowers: The flowers of the Incense Passion Vine are unusual, fragrant, bright blue toned violet with long filaments. They are very attractive to a wide variety of pollinators.
- Growth Habit: Incense is a fast-growing, tendriled vine with soft, big, lobed leaves. It grows dense and lush within the recommended Zone Range with proper care and blooms throughout the summer. A small but tasty fruit typically follows the fruit, and sets readily if other passion vines are nearby and pollinators are active, but it is self-fertile and can be successfully hand-pollinated. Incense is an excellent food and nectar source for Gulf Fritillary and Zebra Wings.
- Care and Maintenance: Most passion vines are fast, agressive growers thru the summer and enter a dormant resting phase in the winter. Feed a good quality fertilizer in the early Spring. Take care not over water. Prune to control size while plants are actively growing. Avoid pruning during dormancy.
- Light Needs: Passion Vines perform best when planted in lightly filtered shade or locations with cool direct morning light and light to moderate shade in the afternoon. Plants will grow in deep shade but flowers and fruit will be reduced in porportion to decreasing light levels.
- Indoor Growing: Yes, but modifications such as increasing humidity, higher temperatures and/or supplemental lighting may be necessary. Take care not overwater.
- For mild temperate climates. Incense is generally recommended for USDA Zones 7, 8, 9 with some sources extending the range into Zone 6. Generally well established plants will freeze to the ground and resprout in the Spring. Elsewhere it is generally evergreen, enters a resting phase in winter. Plant early in the season and protect until well established.
