Cute story.
My granddaughter had to do a book report and we chose this book. It was a joy to read, which made writing the report so much easier. Highly recommend it.

My 7-year old loved it!
I have a recently turned 7-year old who devours books. I actually gave this to her for her 7th birthday. I pre-read it, as a lot of things sneak into kids books that I wouldn't necessarily want her to read. This is 100% safe. Nothing scary or controversial of any kind. Just a sweet, clean kids story that sets no bad examples. Exactly what I would want for her. She absolutely loved it, and read the whole thing in about 3 days. She wants the other two in the series now. It is a well-written story about a girl who can't have pets of her own, so she gets involved helping out at a shelter, making friends with both kids and animals in the process. Everything about it is great, and it even includes an extra section detailing how to make some of the treats for animals that were talked about in the book. This is a great choice for kids in that age range, and parents can rest easy, as there is nothing to worry about in these pages. I highly recommend it!

Great read for a young animal lover
This series was suggested on a summer reading list by the local school district and has been a hit. The realistic relationship situations are great for allowing a child to observe ways to get along with others and work through the budding need for independence in an early elementary schooler. The activity included in each book that allows a child to make a toy for a pet is a wonderful addition.I hope more books will be written in this series!

Good quality chapter book
My daughter is in kindergarten and we've moved on to reading chapter books before bed. We are in the middle of the Junie B. series which she loves, but we took a break to try this one because she loves animals. She did enjoy it, but it did not keep her attention as much as Junie B. As a mom, I really enjoyed it, and felt the pace, dialogue and vocabulary were great. The main character was developed nicely, and there were lots of good facts about how to properly take care of animals. I think students reading this on their own, maybe in 2nd grade, might enjoy it better than as a read-aloud for a younger child. We also really liked the illustrations.

Should look new
This book was a prize gift for a student. It should have looked brand new, but the cover was bent and the back cover has a small bend and tear. It was embarrassing to give a gift that looked like it might have been used.

A Must Read!
My 1st graders can read this book, although it is a longer chapter book. Very happy to be away from the Junie B. only options for reading, although she has successfully read them too. She is very excited to find out what happens at the end. As a first grader, her engagement alone is a strong recommendation for this book. Cynthia Lord really knows how to write in a way that strongly appeals to our younger readers. Would be a great read-aloud for even younger students.

Great for a 6 year old who loves animals
My daughter is enjoying this book. Great for a 6 year old who loves animals.

Not impressed
Describing the scenario where someone would want to buy a pet guinea pig with the intention of feeding it to a snake is totally inappropriate for a book aimed at animal loving children.

Enjoyable read
I bought this book for my son and he has really enjoyed the storyline. He can relate to Susannah and her feelings. He's already looking forward to the next book in the series.
