Agnes Browne [DVD]

Lovely film.
Angelica Huston is wonderful in this film and Marion O'Dwyer is delightful as Mrs. Browne's loyal 'best friend'. The film has a lovely gentle humour to it mixed with tragedy beautifully played which makes it a more subtle and realistic version of the frantic and more obviously comedic, though also very enjoyable, television version of Agnes Brown(e).An evening well spent. To be recommended.

Anjelica Huston as the Irrepressible Dublin Mother of Seven
Anjelica Huston is quite wonderful as Agnes Browne (yes, she's the same Mrs Brown we all know from the more recent TV series where she's played by creator/writer Brendan O'Carroll). It is 1967, and Agnes Browne, mother of seven, has just lost her husband. To give him a decent sendoff (this is Dublin after all), she borrows money from a local loan shark. The film follows her as she copes with the struggles of recent widowhood and her brood of seven unruly children and uses her wit to get by in the world and pay back the loan. There are a few lighter moments when, along with her best friend Marion, she makes the most of the small joys in life. There is a lot of humour, but it's not the crude humour of the TV series. This film is highly enjoyable to watch. Tom Jones appears as himself in a short cameo, and Jennifer Gibney (Mrs Brown's daughter Cathy in the TV series) makes an appearance as Winnie the Mackerel. The DVD has English subtitles. No other extra features.

A wonderful film that is sad in parts but very uplifting.
This was a really very good film, that had fun and some sadness but over all very uplifting. The story is about a widow with 7 children in 1960's Ireland and her husband has just died, and how she manages financially as she works on a market stall in Dublin. It is true to life with all it's up's and down's. Anjelica Huston is excellent in the part of Agnes and is very believable as a young attractive woman keeping her family together in very difficult circumstances. It is funny and sad but very heartwarming with lots of laughter.

Mrs Brown's Boys? Same, but different
We came across this after enjoying Mrs Brown's Boys. It's essentially the same set up, although this comes from the original book (The Mammy) that Mrs Brown - Brendan O'Carroll wrote. The TV series came much later. Overall the film is a much more gentle affair, set in the 1960s. Less punchy than the tv series and (slightly) less blue, it retains the tv series' (and the book before it) pathos, that makes it very touching in places. It's no blockbuster, but it doesn't pretend to be. Just an enjoyable way to spend an evening with all the family. Perhaps not the youngest.... And as another reviewer says, you can catch many of the Mrs Brown's Boys (funny, it's spelt 'Browne' in the film) cast in this too - many of whom, of course, are Brendan's family too

Touching and funny
For any fans of Mrs Brown's Boys, this is a good film to watch. This is the film adaptation of The Mammy and I think one other Brendan O'Carroll book. The books of course are where Mrs Brown originates from. It's a lovely little film directed by Anjelica Houston who also stars as the title character. I was quite impressed with Anjelica's Irish accent. Whilst not perfect it was still pretty good. There are elements of the film that are still present in the show. A couple of cameos from Brendan and his wife who plays on screen daughter in the TV show. Definitely worth a watch and a good price

Friendship and hope
Anjelica Huston plays Agnes Browne, a woman suddenly widowed with seven children to support in a small tenement flat in Catholic Ireland in the 60's. She seems to survive on the small takings from a fruit and vegetable street stand and her equally small widow's pension and child allowance with a great deal of ingenuity and good humour. She is fuelled by her great friendship with Marion and her ability to hope for a better future. It is as the pack describes it, "a boisterous and uplifting story" as we watch Agnes come of age as she finds her independence and new unexpected love.
