I am beyond impressed with this powerhouse of a portable projector!
I purchased this projector on a whim when I saw it on sale at Amazon Warehouse and I'm really glad I took a shot on this projector. I have two other projectors already, an Epson 2150 and a Vivitek Qumi Q3 (more akin to this PIQS projector). I was looking for a better portable projector experience than the Qumi Q3 because the Qumi's android system is sluggish and limited, and the picture is rather dull either on battery power, or plugged into the AC adapter. In comes the PIQS projector and WOW I mean WOW I never expected it to be such great quality, and I can honestly say I will be on the lookout for their future products ahead. When I plugged in the PIQS V projector, the first thing I noticed was nothing...nothing because it was absolutely silent. No fans whirling, just quiet, I mean wow even the Qumi Q3 is loud not to mention the bulky Epson making noise that can only be drowned out by your media content. I'm in love. After a minute the projector brought me to the menu, I immediately connected to the Internet, this was fast and easy using the "Wii like" remote that comes with the projector. Additionally, the controller is accurate and responsive and easy to use. The remote uses a lithium battery so I'm concerned about longevity there and I'm actually going to look for a replacement battery just to see how easy it is to obtain. In regards to replacing the battery on the remote it's quick and easy, just pop it out like a regular remote (nice design!).I was able to update the projector firmware quickly and easily, since the projector is android, it was a very similar process, install one update at a time (there were two updates). The process takes a few minutes to do and afterwards I noticed my HDMI connections were not responding, I simply reset the android projector like I would do any other android device and then my HDMI connections worked perfectly. Just a small hindrance for me, but I can imagine it throwing some people for a loop. In regards to the android OS, since this device doesn't have Google Play, it is recommended to use the PureApk app, this allows you to download and install other APKs from other regions. I have only used this app to update Netflix and the app itself and will have to play around with it later, the android experience isn't super smooth, but it is an open OS and not locked down like the Qumi Q3 so I really appreciate that. Not to mention the experience is much faster than the Qumi and easier to navigate. Just a better projector. Before I get into the image quality of this projector, I simply want to say something about the sound...it's impressive. There are 2x 3 watt speakers, which is not a lot, but they do a lot given their size and power rating and I believe this is from placement. I have a 10 watt mono speaker in my Epson and these 3 watt speakers actually sound better, sound louder and have less distortion. Not to mention there are multiple audio settings for the speakers which I wasn't expecting (I prefer the movie setting due to it's dynamic sound).Okay so the big one, image quality and response time. I'm freaking really impressed here! I just tossed the projector sloppily on a box and shot a 100 inch image during mid-day so plenty of ambient light and wow the picture had pretty good contrast and was easy to view and enjoyable in ambient light! This projector (being LED) is actually perceived as bright as my Epson lamp projector during the day...I am shocked. The resolution is a bump down being WXGA (1280x800) versus the native 1080p of the Epson, but wow, I did not expect this from a projector of this size.Speaking of size, the projector weighs 3.4lb and is about the size of large book.Back to the image quality, the picture is super bright and impressive, even at the lower WXGA resolution the image is sharp. I tried the projector using the Playstation Classic which does native 720p and the quality was nice and satisfactory. I also tried my Xbox One X at 4K and down-scaling to 800P (resolution of the projector) and it looked great. I played a movie, sound was good, nice and clear, heard everything, but of course lacked bass. The image was solid, good color separation and presentation of colors. I then played a couple games, Bloodstained Rituals of the Night, this is a new game meant to play and look like an old one. I mainly played this to test response time, when you hit a button does the projected image react accordingly and it does. The projector doesn't have a game mode, but response time seems quite low and good for gaming, at least single player games. I would never recommend a projector for multiplayer games, at least competitively. On another note, the projector has auto focusing and key-stoning, the keystone is expected and works great, but the auto focus is a nice touch. You can turn this feature on and off in the settings. My only gripe with the auto focus is that it pops in every 10 minutes or so to adjust the image which takes a few seconds, it's annoying, but again you can turn this off and do a manual focus.I tried streaming services, Netflix and HBOgo work well, no problems there, playing movies off my Xbox One X USB port, no problems there, various resolutions, 4K, 1080P and 720P...all movie files look great. Minor issue with the projector is the color out of the box, I had to change the color to the "soft" setting, this gives the picture a warmer color hue which I prefer and it looks more natural. That being said, I had to turn the brightness up one spot because the contrast was making the colors a little too dark. I will calibrate it at a later point, but for now the color accuracy out of the box is decent, but not blowing my mind. The only real issue I ran into here was when I went to play movies from my Microsoft video library I received an error, it said that my display (in this case the projector) was not HTPC compliant and it could not display my content at any resolution, SD, HD or UHD. This was a bummer. I don't know if this is just an Xbox One X issue, or if this issue will extend to other playback devices like my Roku or my Nvidia Shield TV (I have yet to try these), but I will say I did not have this issue on my Epson. However, this is a small setback in an otherwise absolutely stellar projector. I'm very happy with this projector given the amount I paid for it and will keep an eye out for other PIQS products. When I have time later I plan on uploading a YouTube video reviewing this projector, as well as linking it in my review. Simply put, I have never heard of PIQS projectors and I'm really glad that I took a chance on one because this projector beat out a very similar name brand projector, the Vivitek Qumi 3, and can throw down with my Epson. I am impressed.Pic 1 is inside my old apartment watching Cold Pursuit and pic 2 is now at my house using this projector for outside movies next to a fire pit.
