- Selenium. Is most well-known for it's protective effect against biochemically aggressive free radicals; it is an integral component of the catalytic center of the main enzyme of the antioxidant system glutathione peroxidase, which provides inactivation of free forms of oxygen required for antioxidant protection of cell membranes, enhances the action of other antioxidants tocopherol, retinol and others. Selenium increases the response of lymphocytes to various mitogens, increases the production of interleukins 1 and 2, participating in the implementation of cellular and humoral immune responses. *
- Beta-sitosterol – it is a phytosterol similar in composition to cholesterol, found in rice bran, wheat germ, peanuts, corn oil and soybeans. As a cholesterol, beta-sitosterol cannot be converted to testosterone. It also inhibits aromatase and 5-alpha-reductase. * In a randomized placebo-controlled double-blind clinical trial, in which 200 patients with lower urinary tract symptoms received beta-sitosterol at a dose of 20 mg three times a day for 6 months, showed a significant improvement in lower urinary tract symptoms and urinary flow that indicate the effectiveness of beta-sitosterol in the treatment of BPH.
- Zinc – intestinal uptake of zinc is inhibited by estrogen. Because aging men have increased estrogen levels, men with BPH may have low zinc levels. In fact, marginal zinc deficiency is common in older adults, and in men, it may worsen the symptoms of BPH. * Clinical studies showed a correlation between zinc levels, prostate size and BPH symptoms. It was established that the level of zinc effects on morphometric indicators of the prostate gland and, consequently, a decrease in its number with age in men leads to structural changes in the gland.
