What kind of plastic is it? is it food safe (hdpe/ldpe)?

Polypropylene, aka plastic #5, food-grade safe.

Do these float in water?

I’ve never checked to see if they float as-is, but once weighted with hydroton it will be too heavy either way. They’re made to fit over the top of common 5 gallon buckets although I do use mine with smaller sizes. They just don’t fit snuggly.

What is the lip size on these pots?

From outside edge of the net pot to outside edge of the lip is .25"

will the lid actually seal on the top of a standard 5 gallon bucket?

absolutely not. it does not fit the inexpensive Argee black buckets from Home Depot & Amazon. It will fit the Leaktite 5gal, but still not a great seal. i do NOT recommend these, at all. someone dumping inventory of improperly sized lids. STAY AWAY!!!
