Megalodon was the biggest predator ever to swim the oceans. And for 20 million years, this ferocious 50-ton shark with a 9-foot jaw and 7-inch serrated teeth terrorized the creatures of the seas. Now, nearly 2 million years after its extinction, a team of scientists is combining research on today's great white with the only Megalodon fossils ever found to unlock the mysteries of this apex predator.

Megalodon
Large fossil teeth and computer animations of the giant shark Megalodon attacking whales along with filmed scenes of great white sharks swimming, violently thrashing their heads sideways while biting down on baits, and jumping out of the water in capturing prey are the main features in Prehistoric Predators: Monster Shark . Megalodon's skeleton was made of cartilage, which quickly decays from salt water, sand, and bacteria so that only the teeth and the vertebrae remain long after death. The constant and lifelong tooth replacement quality of sharks means that in twenty-five years, a shark has shed 20,000 teeth. The 1909 Bashford Dean jaws reconstruction of Megalodon is viewed as inaccurate with more teeth used than is found in the jaws of the great white shark; the more accurate current reconstruction has twenty-four teeth in the upper jaw and twenty-two teeth in the lower jaw with 200 replacement teeth lining the jaws, which are seven and a half feet in height and eight and a half feet in width. The counting of vertebral rings by Bruce MacFadden indicates that Megalodon lived between twenty-five and forty years or more. Megalodon is estimated to have been 50-60 feet and 50 tons. Using computer reconstructions, Stephen Wroe calculates the bite force for the largest great white sharks to be 4,000 pounds and for Megalodon at 52-67 feet to have been 24,395-40,960 pounds. There are filmed scenes of various marine mammals, and the fossil jaws of prehistoric dolphins and a Squalodon are featured. Ocean cooling at 6-1.8 million years ago, the loss of most of the whales, and the polar migrations of the large whales are viewed as the probable reasons for Megalodon's extinction.Megalodon and the prehistoric sperm whale are featured in excellent realistic computer animations in "Deep Sea Killers" on disc 2 of Jurassic Fight Club: Season One .

Meg is all glory
This is the first show that I have found to be truly great about the Meg. Again, the National Geographic group got it right. I saw a show 15yrs ago on Shark Week that was about the Meg, but I have not been able to find it and this was just perfect. I have a child who loves sharks and this made her ask questions and look for answers that the researchers on this show believe are fact. Thank you for this great show, I wish there were more of them available.

Megalodon is a boss!
This is, without a doubt, one of the best documentaries on the Tyrannosaurus rex of the prehistoric shark world! The research in is great, and Megalodon is portrayed the way it should be: A badass predator!
