Price is right, performance is great
I purchased this product for measuring the engine temps of nitro RC cars. when tuning an RC car - the head temp is an important way to determine if you're running it lean or rich.this IR thermometer is perfect for doing this.. its small, and accurate (when used next to a much larger/more expensive laser unit - it measures withing a few tenths of a degree each time) and the readings are pretty fast.I haven't tested out its waterproof abilities yet, but it feels solid, and has o rings in all the appropriate spots - so i don't doubt them.One neat feature which i'm not sure was documented - if you press and hold the button, you get continuous readings... useful for scanning over a larger area to look for hot spots, or just to ensure a more accurate picture of whats going on with whatever you're measuring.the only thing i wish it had was a backlight - but i'm not deducting a star from it, because it never claimed to have one.All told - i'm very satisfied with this purchase, and have already recommended it to friends in the RC hobby. The price was great, and the performance is a lot better than i expected for the price.

Very Nice, But Not "Washer-Waterproof"
I purchased this device mainly for the interest at finding out various temperatures around me and the readings all seemed to be accurate. It's a very small device that gives out fast readings, so it is nice to be able to take this on-the-go easily.Unfortunately, being this small it is also prone to accidentally being left in a pocket and going through the wash. It said it was water proof, which I hoped that it was, however after finding it after it had been washed I am stuck with an "Er 3" on the screen and erratic readouts.I'm sure a brief submission into water wouldn't hurt it, but "waterproof" does not mean "can go through the wash."With that said I will be purchasing another as really it was only my own fault that it went through the wash.

good temp. sensor, compact, easy to use
Seems like a pretty accurate sensor (measured oven and freezer temperatures along with other thermometer). Not bad for $20. It is as easy as pushing a button and the result shows up pretty fast. So far, it seems quite durable (I have not tested its waterproofness yet but plan to take it canoeing). It is nice to be able to push a button on the underside to change between Celsius and Fahrenheit.Sometimes, I wish it lit up in the dark or had a built in laser, but no matter, I knew I wouldn't be getting that.EDIT 3-24-12:Not as waterproof as I'd like. I tried measuring water temp by submersion but that only made the thermometer give strange readings. Everything went back to normal once it had time to dry.I cannot get accurate high temperature readings (namely, my ski waxing iron). Ski waxes need between 110 and 150 degrees C to melt (each wax has a specific melting temperature; they smoke if the iron is too hot). My iron melted the waxes and made them smoke, but the temperature readings on the iron's surface only read between 50 and 65 C. At least temperature between ice water and body temperature are still accurate.

out of batteries in 2 weeks
Thermometer is easy to use and relatively accurate. I am a culinary trainer/executive steward at the Grand Canyon. Taking temperatures at the 4 units and 6 restaurants is part of my daily duties. The thermometer would be within 12 degrees (at worst) of the ambient temperature of any fridge or freezer. Is about the size of a tube of lipstick and fits easily in my pocket or purse. The reading only takes a second which greatly reduces the time it takes me to do rounds. The only problem I have had is that the batteries were dead within 2 weeks. I purchased replacement batteries (easy to find watch batteries 2 each) that cost me another $10. good product that I will use until its demise. Good value, Good product.

99 cent product for 20 bucks;
This is not completely useless. It does measure temperature... but right at the surface.This has a 1:1 ratio of measurement. In other words, if you're 1 inch away from your target, then your measuring surface area is 1" diameter. Not too bad, if you're measuring some large surface area but measuring area is going to be based on your own needs.Just remember... this does an average temperature of the general area, so if you are only measuring a small area (spot check), you have to be right on top of the object, practically touching the object you're measuring. Otherwise, the surrounding area (even if it includes surface area several inches back or ambient air) will be included in the average temperature.PROS- Accuracy. It measures the temperature to within 10%. I'm guessing. The specs says at 73 degrees, that it can be +/- 5 degrees. You do the math). This is borderline Pro/Con.- It's small, compact.- Has a lanyard.- Batteries included.- Waterproof? Not sure. I don't want to throw this in water... just yet.CONS- Accuracy. This is how well you have set the scope of measuring range (spot measurements have to be right on top of object)- Small display. Hard to read unless right lighting, and at proper angle of viewing.- Push button is difficult (and I have small fingers, and for a guy, it's not something I brag about, but you get my point). Button is flush with the barrel/tube, but there is barely enough room to push the button. Button almost has to be pushed with finger nail. And I know how some ladies might not appreciate that. I'm a guy, with barely any finger nail length, so I'm kind of ... out of luck.After using this product, and comparing it to several other non-contact digital thermometers... this is by far the worst.I'd like to list the other products, but the best for less than $20, would be the HDE Temperature Gun Infrared Thermometer w/ Laser Sight. The only drawback to the HDE is it is bigger.This Kintrex is not a 1-star, because it does do it's job with some effort. I got it, because I read other reviews at how great it was. I guess it just depends on what you're looking for.More info on HDE Gun: This one is quite bigger (pistol grip holds a 9V battery, to give you some reference), but it has a laser, backlight on the bigger display. And measurements from 0 to 2 inches away, give the same measurement. I was able to measure within 2 degrees accuracy (compared to high end thermocouple tester), whereas this Kintrex model was 4 degrees cooler.
