Babylon 5: The Ultimate Collection + The Lost Tales [DVD] [1994]

Babylon 5 is among the top three TV sci-fi series of all time, and this collection is the most comprehensive boxset to date. If you missed B5 when it was fresh and are interested in science fiction then you should definitely watch it. B5 is as good as Star Trek Next Gen and DS9 at their very best, and is massively superior to many other space/fantasy series (including the likes of Stargate, later Farscape, Voyager and so on. Although you may have your own favourites there!).The action centres on a deep space station populated by warring races of humans and aliens who forge and break alliances as galactic war breaks out. It's a massive space opera with great big spaceships and weird aliens and all that -- but every episode contains very personal, human stories as the relationships between the main characters develop.B5 was also one of the first serial TV programmes which didn't have to finish each episode back where it started. In fact, funding hiccups not withstanding, creator JoeMS had a good idea of where the show was heading when he started it, and some of the plot lines which appear in the opening episodes make little sense until two or three seasons later. Then you have a 'eureka!' moment when you realise that he planned it all along. But the fact that the scenario moves along means that the characters are in real jeopardy; some of the show's drama comes from the fact that Captain Kirk won't always be back at the helm after 44 minutes...B5 also started the trend towards more realistic TV sci-fi, where there's at least some basis in believable science (rather than technobabble quick fixes to a cliff-hanger). Harlan Ellison was consulted about much of the science so it hangs together in a plausible manner, and humankind are by no means the dominant force in the universe. Nor are all the aliens the same, and they're not cardboard cut-outs either. There's a young, aggressive race with a chip on its shoulder; an aging Empire long past it greatness; a spiritual race of warriors, and the very mysterious Vorlons. But their individual ambassadors become detailed characters as the series develops -- no one on Babylon 5 is exactly who they seem...B5 isn't perfect. The opening episodes are clunky and a couple of them really drag (SoulHunter is my least fave) but they are worth putting up with because from the second half of the first season it becomes gripping viewing. There's a hiccup at the end of the third season (when the series might have ended but it found last-minute funding to carry on), which results in a dramatic semi-finale... but then two more seasons progress the plot beyond that point.Bab5 was among the first shows to use CGI and (fifteen years ago!) it looked very strange after years of seeing models wobbling around on screen. The digital remastering on this DVD set is very effective, though, and it feels much more 'natural' given how much CGI is used today.Some of the 'science fiction' looks a little dated these days (the hand communicators are a bit twee for the 23rd century, for instance), but the imaginative canvas and scope of B5 is still breathtaking. Within the confines of 45-minutes of popular TV, JoeMS tackles the nature of good and evil, the forces of imperialism and racism, and the possiblity of true loyalty across natural boundaries. And there are big space battles too!We already own the entire original series on VHS but a recent viewing showed up how clunky that format is. We've waited to buy a dvd set because we knew this one was on the way and are keen to see The Lost Tales -- a recent revisit to the B5 universe to see what has happened to some of the key characters in the original series.Plus you get the movies and the spin-off series Crusade too (and Crusade could have been a winner if it had been allowed to develop), which means this is the B5 boxset to buy, then watch again and again in years to come.It's not cheap to buy, of course, but we'll get plenty of value from it.If you're not sure that B5 is for you then try renting some of the first series, but don't be put off by the pilot epiosde cos it does take a while to settle down. A couple of character changes -- most notably the introduction of Ivanova as Exec Officer -- really improve the actual series over the feature-length pilot.A word of warning: the documentaries are good viewing and can be watched as you go along. BUT unless you already know what happens, then don't watch the episodes with Joe's commentaries until you've seen the whole series. His voice-overs are great; revealing bits about the particular episode and info about what wen wrong, why this looks that way, and so on. They also give away tonnes of info about the extended plot, so must be considered to be Spoiler Central.Overall this is truly excellent TV sci-fi. Enough viewing to keep you going through long winter nights and well worth re-watching a couple of years later.

All films, all seasons, plus Crusade. Obviously, the last film The Road Home is not included. If you like Babylon 5 and would like to see it all, it is a good buy especially, that it is in the screen format 1.77x16.9. The Blue Ray edition is in 4x3. The Blue Ray edition looks great (the picture is sharp and full of details) but the aspect ratio is really bad. I understand that the editor wanted to bring the experience of the 90s when the serial was broadcast (Tv sets were mostly in 4x3 format, then). The DVD has a better aspect ratio, commentary and a lot of extras. If you want a better picture and don't mind any extras and black strips on both sides of the screen take the Blue Ray version. If you want extras and a full experience of Babylon 5 in lower resolution, take this box. You won't be disappointed. Especially, since the price is lower than the Blue Ray Box.

A superb buy!! One of the best buys you can find on the net if you are a sci-fi/B5 fan! You will find it hard to get it for less brand new and fully covered by Amazon delivery policy!! Em 23/11/2023 não constava a região dos DVDs no anúncio. Examinando as imagens (aumentando) vi que era região 2 - infelizmente já havia comprado. Região 2 não funciona em DVD player brasileiro.

Cofanetto bellissimo e ben fatto che contiene l'intera saga di Babylon 5 in lingua inglese, quindi tutte le stagioni, il pilot The Gathering (da vedere per primo), lo spin off Crusade e tutti i TV movie. Occupa poco spazio perchè i cofanetti delle singole stagioni sono sottili. Finora ho visto solo il pilot e gli effetti speciali lasciano un pò a desiderare, anche rispetto ad altre serie di fantascienza degli anni '90, ma le premesse a livello di storia sono molto interessanti e ricordo dalle stagioni viste in TV che la trama fosse coinvolgente, non vedo l'ora di rivivere l'esperienza finalmente, stavolta, per intero. La consiglio a tutti gli appassionati di fantascienza.

Ma précédente commande concernant l’intégrale ne m’ayant pas transmis le bon coffret, j’ai décidé de commander l’import Anglais, car je ne pouvais rester longtemps sans ma série de SF préférée, et bien m’en a pris, car le contenu est tout simplement excellent, et cette fois au bon prix.Le coffret est très beau, il est rigide, ce qui protège parfaitement et contient absolument TOUT :- Le pilote « Gathering » en VO- Les cinq saisons en VO et VOST, réparties sur 30 disques, dont 6 par saison- Le film « In the Beginning » en VO et VOST- Les trois films « Third Dimension », « River Of Souls » et « A Call To Arms » en VO et VOST- La série dérivée « Crusade » en VO et VOST, répartie sur 5 disques- Le film « The Legend Of The Rangers » en VO et VOST- Le film « Lost Tales » en VODire que la série est un chef-d’œuvre de la SF, révèle de l’euphémisme. Créée par Joe Michael STRACZYNSKI, il s’impose d’emblée comme un showrunner de génie en construisant son histoire plusieurs années avant son entrée en production et s’assure qu’il y ait un début, un milieu et une fin, le tout élaboré sur une période déterminée de 5 ans, écrivant lui-même quasiment tous les scénarios des 110 épisodes, chaque saison constituant un chapitre d’un univers extrêmement riche et d’une complexité inégalée, elle offre tout ce qu’un fan de série est en droit d’attendre et même plus. Car l’auteur avait également tout prévu, y compris une sortie pour chaque personnage en cas de défection de certains acteurs et des plans de remplacement pour chaque intrigue, au cas où il y aurait un revirement de la production qui empêcherait l’aventure de mener à son terme. Finalement, la réussite s’avère totale, puisque la série arrive à clore toutes ses intrigues en suspens, apporte des réponses à toutes les questions posées et amène chaque personnage vers sa destination finale, avec une précision quasi chirurgicale, car bien après leur mort, l’importance de leur héritage est posée et l’on assiste aux conséquences de leurs actes qui ont de profondes répercussions dans un futur situé des milliers d’années après.L’histoire commence 10 ans après la dernière guerre ayant eu lieu entre les Terriens et une race extraterrestre appelée les Minbari, la station spatiale « Babylon 5 », a été construite afin d’éviter une nouvelle guerre et constitue ainsi le dernier espoir de paix. Elle accueille à son bord l’équipage terrien de la station ainsi que les principaux ambassadeurs des différents peuples extraterrestres : les Minbari forment une des civilisations les plus anciennes et les plus avancées technologiquement, les Centauri constituent une puissance majeure, mais jugeant leur société sur le déclin, rêvent de retrouver leur puissance d’antan, les Narns, longtemps asservis par les Centauri, sont devenus une société militarisé après s’être libérés du joug de leur oppresseur et leur vouent toujours une haine farouche et les Vorlons représentent la race la plus ancienne et la plus mystérieuse de la galaxie. Il annonce l’univers babylonien, même si beaucoup de modifications seront faites par la suite, que ce soit au niveau de certains personnages qui seront remplacés par d’autres ou des visuels modifiés concernant les races extra-terrestres. La trame centrale est basée sur les Vorlons et la venue de l’ambassadeur Kosh sur la station spatiale.Chaque saison comporte un titre, et ce n’est pas un hasard, s’il indique la direction prise par le show. La première saison intitulée « Symbole et Présage », qui commence en 2258, permet essentiellement d’exposer lentement mais sûrement, les fondations annonciatrices des futurs bouleversements à venir. Tous les personnages principaux sont quasiment présents, très attachants et non manichéens, ils allient à la fois une part lumineuse et sombre et sont dotés d’une épaisseur psychologique qui leur donnent une force insoupçonnée. Toutes les intrigues se mettent en place et les enjeux abordent plusieurs thématiques comme la politique, la tolérance, la philosophie et le spirituel, sans oublier le jeu des relations humaines, l’action, un peu d’humour bien placé et la tension qui monte progressivement.La deuxième saison nommée « La Venue des Ombres », située en 2259, passe à la vitesse supérieure, avec la venue d’un nouveau personnage à la tête de la station, le commandant John Sheridan, ainsi que l’apparition d’une nouvelle race extraterrestre très ancienne et belliqueuse : les Ombres, qui menace la galaxie entière. La transformation d’un personnage important en surprendra plus d’un et différentes querelles entre races extraterrestres vont prendre des proportions catastrophiques, qui mèneront à la guerre et à leur anéantissement, le peuple vainqueur assurant une montée en puissance, teintée d’un destin funeste à son ambassadeur, tandis que le peuple vaincu voit son ambassadeur plongé dans la déchéance.La troisième saison intitulée « Point de Non-Retour » affiche clairement la couleur avec son titre explicite et augmente de plusieurs crans d’intensité. Nous sommes en 2260, la guerre est présente sur plusieurs niveaux et embrase différents peuples : les Centauri font face à la plupart des races qui les entourent, la Terre opère un virage des plus sombres, qui va obliger l’équipage terrien de la station à faire des choix importants, qui auront de profondes répercussions et le conflit contre les ombres est lancé et emporte tout sur son passage, apportant des conséquences cataclysmiques. Le dernier épisode s’achève sur le sort plus qu’incertain de certains des personnages principaux, préfigurant de leur destinée dans la saison suivante.La quatrième saison porte bien son nom, « Ni Réédition, Ni Retraite ». En 2261, certaines guerres trouvent leur résolution, tandis que d’autres se transforment et continuent de plus belle. Plusieurs personnages sont de retour, mais changés par les événements, étonnent par leurs réactions étranges et décalés, les réponses seront apportées vers la fin de la saison.Le film « La Cinquième Dimension » (« Thirdspace »), se déroule en 2261, après la guerre contre les Ombres. Il peut être regardé après le milieu de la quatrième saison. Un artefact est ramené par une escadrille de starfurys à bord de la station, ce qui commence à provoquer des comportements étranges un peu partout. Il pourrait s’agit d’un portail qui mène au-delà de l’hyper-espace.La cinquième saison intitulée « La Spirale Infernale », se situe en 2262 et traite des conséquences des saisons passées, en s’assurant de la conclusion de toutes les intrigues. Le Capitaine Elisabeth Lochley arrive sur la station avec une nouvelle mission et tous les personnages font face à leur destin, dans un dernier épisode magnifique, qui se passe 20 ans dans le futur, en 2281, qui annonce également le devenir de la station mythique. Le film « Au commencement » (« In The Beginning »), comme son titre l’indique, revient aux origines de l’histoire. Il se déroule de 2245 à 2248 et raconte la guerre entre les Terriens et les Minbari. Bien que racontant la genèse du projet, puisqu’il sert de préquel chronologiquement, il a été produit après la cinquième saison et dévoile beaucoup de choses, à voir après la série.Le film « La Rivière Des Ames » (« River Of Souls »), se situe en 2263, un an après la cinquième saison, à regarder ensuite. Un chasseur d’âmes monte à bord de la station, afin de récupérer une orbe volée, qui contiendrait des milliards d’âmes, issues d’une civilisation disparue.Le film « La Légende Des Rangers » (« The Legend Of The Rangers »), se passe en 2265, à regarder après la série. Le Ranger David Martel, est chargé d’escorter le croiseur Valen, qui transporte plusieurs diplomates à son bord, dont l’ambassadeur G’Kar, à qui l’on doit présenter les preuves de l’apparition d’un nouvel ennemi. A l’origine, prévu comme épisode pilote d’une série dérivée, qui ne vit jamais le jour.Le film « L’Appel Aux Armes » (« A Call To Arms »), se situe en 2267, à regarder après la série. Après cinq ans de paix, les alliés des Ombres décident de se venger de la Terre. Il sert surtout d’introduction à la série dérivée (Voir ci-après).La série dérivée « 2267, Ultime Croisade » (« Crusade ») s’inscrit dans la continuité de sa série mère et se passe directement après les événements survenus dans le film « L’Appel Aux Armes » (A Call To Arms »). Une race extraterrestre, les Drakhs, les serviteurs des Ombres, ont répandu sur terre un virus génétiquement modifié, programmé pour s’activer d’ici 5 ans. Le Capitaine Matthew Gideon et son équipage, à bord du vaisseau Excalibur, disposent de ce temps déterminé afin de trouver un remède et d’empêcher l’extinction de l’humanité. On retrouve le Capitaine Elisabeth Lochley, seul personnage issu de « Babylon 5 », qui fait le lien avec les événements passés.Même si pour moi, elle ne surpasse en rien « Babylon 5 », elle n’en demeure pas moins une très bonne série. Résolument encré dans l’univers déjà établi, tous les acteurs sont excellents et restituent leurs personnages de manière crédible. Son seul défaut réside dans le fait qu’elle ne soit pas allée au-delà des 13 épisodes, le conflit résultant entre la chaine TNT et le créateur Joe Michael STRACZYNSKI, finissant par provoquer l’arrêt définitif de la série et l’irrésolution des intrigues, puisque sa durée initiale était basée sur 5 ans.Vient enfin le film « The Lost Tales » qui se déroule en 2271, à voir après la série. Comme son nom l’indique, c’est une anthologie, qui présente deux histoires différentes mais importantes concernant la station. La première est centrée sur le Capitaine Elisabeth Lochley, chargée de résoudre un problème surnaturel, tandis que la deuxième met en valeur John Sheridan, qui met tout en œuvre afin de résoudre une équation impossible, afin d’éviter un sort funeste à la Terre, prévu dans 30 ans.Œuvre magistrale s’il en est, munie d’un scénario en béton armé et d’une cohérence à toute épreuve, la série a marqué de son empreinte la culture SF comme aucune autre. Innovante au niveau des effets spéciaux numériques, bien que la perception de ces derniers soit un peu modifiée à travers le temps, elle réussit à faire le maximum avec un budget minimum de 500 000 Dollars par épisode (à titre de comparaison, Star Trek Deep Space Nine bénéficiait d’un budget de 3,5 millions par épisode) et réussit à très bien vieillir, 25 ans après sa création. Elle laisse après son visionnage, la sensation d’avoir assisté à quelque chose d’unique, une aventure épique et des plus aboutie, qui ne manquera pas de vous laisser sur le carreau, une fois le dernier épisode passé. Personnellement, je ne me lasse pas de voir et revoir cette intégrale de ce monument de la SF. Bluffant et réellement passionnant.
