.com Disney's Animated StoryBook: Hercules is based on Walt Disney's 35th full-length animated feature film. This new interactive reading journey follows the adventures of the legendary Hercules, the mighty son of Zeus, as he struggles to gain his rightful place among the gods. Interactive story screens filled with surprise animations, five exciting learning activities, original character voices, captivating music, and an introduction to Greek mythology provide children with hours of fun and learning as they relive Hercules's heroic adventures to save Mount Olympus. Review Our testers thoroughly enjoyed this seventh Disney animated storybook that follows the plot of the animated movie, Hercules. The adventures of this legendary figure are told through Disney's tremendous animation as well as through the songs and narration of the film's original voice cast. Children follow along as the tale is spun in 18 interactive story scenes. Along the way, they play five logic and skill games and are playfully introduced to Greek mythology. The rhyming text is highlighted as it is read aloud, and there is even a lesson to be learned- "A true hero is not measured by the size of his strength, but by the strength of his heart." The games, several of which are multilevel, include checkers, where you play against Hades or a friend, and a matching game where pairs of identical Hydra heads must be clicked upon as they flash on and off. There's also a monster-maker activity and a "moving" maze game in which players must find their way up Mt. Olympus through lava, ice and clouds! Another activity asks children to click on blinking stars to learn about constellations. Testers found the games both fun and challenging. Grown-ups commented that the activities had little educational value as compared to other recent Animated StoryBook releases, namely 101 Dalmatians. Of course, that didn't bother the children at all! Kids especially liked the three karaoke-style sing-alongs, although some were disappointed that not all of the film's songs were included. As with most interactive storybooks, replayability can be an issue....kids may tire of this after several plays. Still, the program is engaging, and the multiple skill level games will most likely keep kids coming back.
