It works (Mediacom)
I set the modem up easily with Mediacom. It isn't much better than the rental, but will pay for itself in a few months. Here is what you will need to do in order to save any hassle that I had to go through:1. You need to plug it in and connect it up, then call Mediacom customer service for them to set it up on their end.2. You should be re-directed now to a website by opening a browser and going to netflix or any website in general to the setup page. You should have a activation code and account number to enter here. If not, you can try the last 9 digits of your account number, as that was my activation code. The other option on this page is to log in with your mediacom ID, but if you are like me then you dont have one, and the account to pay bills online isn't the same. Don't bother with that and just use account number and activation code (you can call customer service again to get the code if there is a problem).3. I reset my router and ran a setup and update, you might not need to.4. Take back the old modem and power cable to the closest mediacom store!

These modems are USED and NOT sold by Cisco!!
The listing shows these modems are being sold as new and sold by Cisco. This is absolutely NOT the case. The beginning of the description lists the item again as new. At the very end of a long and very busy description including multiple service providers and different modems, there is a statement that this modem is used. I don't know if this statement existed when I purchased mine or not. I contacted Amazon and they said they would open an investigation so it is possible they contacted the seller and they added this after my purchase. Either way, it is STILL difficult to even find among all the other text.COX is my service provider and they will not activate a modem that is already associated with another account. That was the case for the first modem I received. The second modem I received COX said the serial number was not even associated with the Cisco Model number. I am unsure if all service providers do this or if it is only COX. Either way, these modems are definitely used items and they are definitely NOT sold by Cisco. Windowshopping is the seller. Avoid these modems if you are looking for an actual new item. I was also informed that you can only find these modems new on Cisco's website.

Failed fast... Cisco support non existent.
While this cable modem worked fine initially, it started to fail about 95 days into the 90 day warranty. I know that this kind of thing can happen from time to time, but the support I received from Cisco was simply awful. I searched for "Cisco modem warranty" and called a number on the resulting Cisco website. That was the wrong number so they transferred me to small business support... even after telling them that I was a consumer. Guess what? Small business support told me I needed consumer support and transferred me to a Linksys support line that didn't recognize my model number and gave me two new phone numbers to try. I doubt I'll ever purchase another Cisco/Cisco Consumer/Cisco Small Biz/Linksys product going forward.Thank you to Amazon Prime support for helping me resolve this problem!

Bought a used one and it overheated
I had purchased this model back in 2015 used. It lasted until 2019 then it died.4 years is a good run.I recently bought another used one (same exact model). I plugged it up and noticed it was extremely hot...much hotter than my previous one and I even smelled a strong electrical smell after plugging it in.Long story short, it overheated and died. At least it died quick and didn’t start a fire while asleep.

2 year review. Worth the $ I spend for this refurb unit
I bought this about 2 years ago as a used/refurbished for a dirt cheap price of under $20. It worked great for all this time till about a month or so ago when it started having issues. Major issue is with it restarting every so often and causing connection disruptions. Cable company (Cox) checked on their end and found no issue and the tech suggested that it may be time to replace the modem. When hardwired to my laptop while running a speed test, it restarts as soon as the upload test begins. So it seems like it is not able to take a sudden surge of data as upload. But all in all, for the amount of $ I spent it served its purpose.

Bargain price for a speedy modem.
I was quite happy with my old Motorola DOCSIS 2.0 modem, until it started malfunctioning and started dropping internet connection several times daily. Then I called Cox and I was told that they recommend a DOCSIS 3.0 modem and it would cost me $150. I was surprised because I always assumed (probably incorrectly) that the ISPs were supposed to provide modem freely. I told them that I would buy the modem online and after reading reviews decided to buy Cisco DPC3010 DOCSIS 3.0 8x4 Cable Modem. The online price is a bargain compared to what Cox asked for a similar modem. It arrived just 2 days after my order. I removed the old modem and connected the new one in its place and tried to log on to internet and got the Cox equipment self-activation page which asked for my name, last four numbers of my social security, my telephone #, and the Cox order #. Since I ordered the modem from a third party, I did not have a Cox order #. So, I had to call the Cox activation telephone number and had to wait for 15 minutes for a technician to answer. But once the technician came online, she was very courteous and patient with me. She took the serial # and MAC address of the modem and activated the modem. However it did not work right away. She stayed online with me and helped me to troubleshoot and after about 15-20 minutes everything worked fine. I immediately noticed that the web pages opened faster and downloads happened almost instantly. Overall, it was a pleasant experience. I highly recommend this modem for any Cox internet subscribers.
