Brush-on vs aerosole
I have both products and found that the brush-on liquid needs one-two applications to get a good result. With the spray after two applications it is still not covered as well as with the brush-on treatment.Definitely more convenient to use and much faster to apply, although not sure if it will give the same level of protection. If i need to spray this 3-4 times to get good coverage than I may get faster and better result using the brush-on liquid. One major issue with brush-on product is that you should never use it out of the bottle unless you plan to use all of it. If you dip the brush into the bottle rust particles on the brush will react with the the product and in a few days any unused portion will turn into unusable mess.

Pleasantly surprised with results-description of method used
I used this product on the advice of Catalina Direct's DVD on refinishing a C-22 sailboat keel. I removed all the rust that I could from the cast iron keel with a 4.1/2" Makita angle grinder down to bare metal. There were pitted areas that resembled tooth decay that could not be accessed, so those were left as-is. I painted one side of the keel with 81773 Rust Treatment and allowed it to dry. It turned the keel into a beautiful black color and I was excited about the results. However, the next day it seemed the surface was fragile. Attempts to "roughen" the surface in preparation for an epoxy barrier coat saw the product flaking off at the areas where it was applied over bare metal. At this point I was skeptical and decided to do a test (as I had many more layers of various epoxy and body filling products yet to be applied). I applied a 12"x12" square of West System 105/205 marine epoxy over a sample area and allowed it to cure. I then came back with various tools to try to remove the epoxy. I was absolutely amazed at the quality of the bond. I was able to scratch down to the bare metal with a screwdriver and mallet, but attempts to "lift" the epoxy off the metal were utter failures. I tried using paint scrapers and even a razor scraper. The epoxy itself would fail before the bond to the metal, and I am convinced that the product works as advertised. I don't pretend to be a chemist, but I believe the epoxy either penetrated the Permatex product or absorbed it into the epoxy. Many users have complained that it's not for automotive bodywork. I don't believe this is correct. The product is not suitable for direct exposure to the elements. It needs a primer of some sort over it before paint can be applied. My experience was with epoxy, and I would predict that an epoxy primer would suffice, but other types might work as well. Unfortunately, the Permatex website is near useless when looking for answers. I'd say to test a section and see what happens.

Not Recommended for Auto Frames
I bought this to try to clean up and recoat some rust on the frame of my 2005 Wrangler. Spent a great deal of time (often with the Jeep inconveniently out of service for several days as coatings dried) scraping, Dremel wire wheeling, applying the product, and top coat painting. Found that in a mere summer month areas were puffing up and discoloring as rust continued to form underneath. Tried on some easily accessible areas to do as perfect prep work as was possible only to find that again within a summer month spots continued to rust and eventually break through. I now suspect that the coating part of this product (perhaps because it was made to be applied in a water based solution) may have an affinity for moisture that actually makes rust worse. On the other hand it does sort of bubble and then change colors which gives the impression that it is doing something cool and useful. Also its effectiveness may have a lot to do with the make up of the steel that it is applied to. Having used this and the same paint on other miscellaneous items has shown mixed results with some rusting quickly and others looking good after a few months. I am now leery of any type of rust converter/encapsulator product, though perhaps with other brands or in other situations they work better.I think that a better, more consistent option for my situation would be good cleanup and some common rusty metal primer and appropriate paint (Rustoleum) from any hardware or home improvement store. I know that these will typically buy at least a couple years of protection on most surfaces and I can make touchups a part of any work I do.Based on a great deal of research another option is a moisture curing product (like POR15 and Chassis Saver) which can work extremely well and last a very long time, but may not always adhere well to smoother or less well prepped surfaces and have limited shelf lives and extreme sensitivity to contamination with moisture. Then there are rubberized undercoatings which can protect well, but can also crack over time, trapping moisture and contaminants. Thick coatings also make it difficult to accurately asses the condition of the metal underneath. I've also found that some people use an oil, grease, or wax type coating with great success, however these need to be re-applied regularly and will obviously make it difficult to go back to paint or any other coating.

Works fantastic
Not sure why this product I so hard to find in Canada, maybe something to do with chemicals used . Very expensive to order at $60 with shipping versus around I think $15 a can in the US.However for treating rust I’ve come across nothing better.Still worth it if you think of h cost to cut out/grind down metal to fix certain rust and repaint

Permatex rust treatment was simple to apply and looked good prior to top coating.
I used this product on the door sills of a car as rust had formed under the plastic clip on protectors, it went on fine and I gave it the 24 hours before applying a suitable primer and overcoat. Time will be the judge as to how affective it is.

Good but not for passenger cars..
I couldn’t really use it. My Bodyshop said it’s very good but it’s more for thicker panels (Trucks) not passenger cars with thin panels..
