A wonderful video, but get the 1993 version
Our son is almost three and he loves Spot. When we bought our first Spot video, we were concerned he might not like it as well because the animation is very unsophisticated by today's standards. It just goes to show you that you can't apply adult rationale to discern a toddler's preferences. Spot videos are by far his favorite. This one has a number of charming stories including a trip to the farm where he is looking for all the baby animals. The new version is a reworked version of the original which came out in 1993. My only problem with the new version is that after each segment they decided to throw in a Sesame Street style teaching session where politically correct children teach various lessons with the help of a narrator. While I have no problem with this format (these learning formats can be valuable), it interrupts the continuity of the program and imposes a lesson on the child that reduces his/her enjoyment of the video. Spot contains many implicit lessons for children and it really doesn't need to be "enhanced" with an explicit teaching session. This is a classic case of well meaning Disney executives feeling compelled to fix something that wasn't broken and diminishing it in the process. When the children come on, my son says, "I don't want children, I want more Spot." After a few viewings, I began fast forwarding through the children to get to the next Spot segment. The 1993 version isn't "new and improved". It is just pure Spot without the children's segments, so I recommend you buy that one.
