Perfect Packing Light Backpack for me
The media could not be loaded. I've been using this backpack for about a few weeks now.It works great with a few packing cubes and you are on your way. I'm looking forward to the first time I get to try this out on a longer journey. The straps are comfortable and it is a good fit for my 68 inch frame.Pros: * Less than half cost of updated version *Numerous pockets * Well padded waist belt and shoulder straps, along with adjustable chest strap help to distribute weight *Easy zipper access to main and laptop sleeve from top. *Durable backpack exterior material * Works as carry-on-only for bulk of US airlines * Works well with Packing Light concept. My pack weighs in at 3.67 pounds.Cons: * Tips over easily when fully packed * Can not adjust to fit your torso length: Fixed distance between waist strap and shoulder straps.Well that's my review written and video. I'll update if anything changes.Disclosure: I paid full price for my bag and received no compensation for this review.

Terrible for travel in Europe.
I purchased the Setout for it’s weight, potential ease of getting on and off planes, trains, Metros and buses, the great reviews as well as it’s organizational potential. I travel at least 2 months a year and have owned every type of carry-on. I’m in my late 50’s and fitness and sports are a huge part of my life. I enjoy backpacking and thought the Tortuga would be a good fit. I was completely wrong. The Setout was a nightmare on a recent trip. My packs total weight was 19 lbs for a 10 day trip. It was manageable on planes, but horrible on other means of transportation. It was pouring rain off and on- impossible to get the pack off and put on or take off rain gear in crowds. I was either too hot or soaking wet. It was too bulky for busy trains and metros, often causing long waits for less crowded transportation. I emailed the company on day 2 asking to return it when I was back in California. Their response was a solid “no”. I have never written a review on Amazon, but I wanted to inform others of the difficulties that I had with the Setout.

The good, the bad, and the ugly
The Good: tough! This backpack/carry on is well constructed, of heavy duty materials. Do be careful when zipping up the cover for the harness. This can fit a little tight. If you are in a hurry it could jam or break, but as long as you are careful it should not be a problem. Really liked that this model HAS a cover for the suspension harness. I like having it tucked away when going through customs and TSA. Three weeks in Europe - no stitching, zipper, or fabric failures. The suspension harness is great! Solid and comfortable. As a method of transporting my stuff, I much prefer it to a rolling suitcase (cobblestones). The bad: the suspension harness takes up a substantial percentage of the volume of the bag. 44L? I am sceptical. I did not actually measure it, but there is far less room in this pack then you would think from the pictures. I guess the harness takes up about 1/3 of the volume. While this is a real drawback, I should point out that the cheap-o airfares generally only allow 22 pounds weight for carry on baggage. ( Interestingly, easyJet in Europe has no weight limit on carry-ons, just dimension limits). This bag, fully packed with clothing, weighted in at about 19 - 20 pounds. So having more volume, might not have been helpful, but you need to know it's not going to be as roomy as you think. The ugly: (not really, just liked the title): That oh-so-nice suspension system is not light. Weight of the bag is as advertised. Doesn't seem like much when you are reading it in the specs, but when you are trying to keep the weight under 22 pounds, it starts to matter. Bottom line;. Will I use this on my next trip to Europe? Answer; I don't know. I like it a lot. As long as I can pack light enough to get everything in, it's my first choice. But I have another bag, lighter construction, very basic suspension system, much more room. For now I think the Tortuga will be what I take. I do really like it, but I will consider the lighter bag when I start packing. I got everything I needed in the Tortuga, and place a lot of value on that suspension system, but it does not come without compromising weight and volume. Still worth a 4 Star rating.

Poor design of zippered panels. Questionable quality at an inflated price.
The Tortuga has an intriguing design and one very obvious fatal flaw. The pack shoulder straps and hip belt fold neatly against the back of the pack, and is completely covered when the light weight rear panel is zipped closed. The enclosure is what quickly converts a decently sized, well constructed day pack into a sleek carry-on bag that will easily fit beneath an airline seat. The ability to hide the shoulder straps and waist belt into the back of the pack is the main strength of this convertible bag. There is ,however, a problem when you convert the carry-on bag into its day pack configuration. Now half of the zipper coil is exposed. The entire 50 inch edge of the pack and it's light weight zipper is unprotected. Being a front loading pack it is the side with the exposed zipper that will be against the ground. Additionally the unprotected zipper is adjacent to several stress points-the pack strap attachments on the top and bottom and the hip belt attachment on the bottom. This may not be an issue in the hotel room loading it,nor converting the pack to a bag configuration. for under the airline seat. That 50 inches of unprotected zipper is going to get abraded from grit, friction, mud and all the zipper killing monsters out there. This one of those " Made in China" gems-I do NOT believe that the tiny scratches on the zipper pull are legitimate YKK group markings. The Tortuga has a retail price of $200USD. On Amazon it sell for $124USD. In this price range you could be getting a Kelty RedWing and afford a rain-cover as well.
