The most distinguished pianist of his generation, a brilliant pedagogue and a highly gifted composer, José Viana da Mota was a towering personality in the field of Portuguese music. Disapproving of 'modernistic' compositional trends he stopped composing around 1910 but not before he had written his Symphony 'To the Homeland', a brilliantly orchestrated paean to Portuguese prowess and discovery which makes use of Portuguese folk dances and songs. Based on the dramatic life and murder of the 14th-century noblewoman Inês de Castro, Viana da Mota's Lisztian symphonic poem is an early work notable for it's kaleidoscopic sections full of inspiring contrasts. This recording presents the complete orchestral works of Viana da Mota.

Outing for a Portuguese Romantic.
Viana da Mota (1868-1948) was a Portuguese composer, pianist and teacher. One of Liszt's last pupil's, he became a renowned virtuoso. The present disc comprises all of Viana da Mota's works for orchestra alone. The symphony was composed in 1895, and is a kind of Musical Affirmation of Portuguese Sovereignty. In the usual four movements, the style is broadly Germanic. However, the third movement scherzo uses traditional Portuguese tunes, and the final movement is dramatic in the extreme, starting in darkness with tam-tams and drums, before ending in triumph. Ines de Castro is an early work composed in Mota's eighteenth year. It deals with tragic events involving the 14th century Portuguese Royal Family. The remaining pieces are piano works orchestrated by various hands, including the composer's. They make charming make weights. The Liverpudlian orchestra sound very engaged with the music, under their Portuguese conductor. The recording is excellent. No hidden masterpieces but music well worth exploring. Thoroughly recommended.
