Q: Trying to decide if the features of the 5 speed outweigh the price difference over the 3 speed. What would I be missing if I bought the 3 speed?

I think it would depend on the features you think you might use. I only use the S blade for ice and frozen fruit smoothies and for making gravy and soups - the other uses stated in the write up are just not things I have used it for. But then again I am not really cooking for a family - just 2 adults. I travel a good bit and take mine with me for the morning smoothies, but I don't really have room for the case, so that stays home. I would check to see if the motor is the same size on the 3 vs 5 speed as that will also make a difference if you plan to use it with ice and frozen fruits like I do - more frozen will need bigger motor. I had my original one for over 12 years which was a variable speed and used it several times a day and the only reason I needed a new one was sloppy in putting the blender mechanism on and when I turned the motor on it broke the connection between the two. The motor still works great, just couldn't get a repair job on it. Hope this helps.

Q: what is the wattage of this machine?

Wattage is not listed but Amperage is 1.8 so wattage should be 110 * 1.8 = 198

Q: Has anyone washed the blending arm, chopper adapter, and whisk adapter? The manual said wipe adapters with a damp cloth. I prefer washing it though.

After using my Kitchen Aid immersion blender I frequently fill a bowl with hot water and a small amount of dish soap, insert the chopper or whisk attachment and turn the blender on in short bursts. The attachment comes our "clean as a whistle." I then unplug and disassemble the unit, wash the blending arm in the bowl, and rinse all parts in hot water. I then allow all parts to air dry. Works great for me.
