Do NOT buy this pen if you are an English speaker---it provides no pinyin; no pronunciation of the Chinese characters.
True, Pinyin is not a language. But Chinese characters do not pronounce themselves. So this pen is absolutely useless for an English speaker because it provides no pinyin and no audio translation either of the Hanzi.The only people who will find this product helpful are Chinese speakers because the pronunciation of an English word is embedded in the English word itself. And because the pen speaks the English pronunciation. But alas, not so with the Chinese characters. So it's a useless product.I have been learning Chinese for some. time. I live in Shanghai. I speak pretty well. Pinyin IS a necessary evil when learning new characters Chinese because there is no other way to know how to pronounce the characters or tones. The radicals often help with meaning, and the base sometimes gives a clue to pronunciation, but not always. As for tones: pinyin is the only way when you are reading by yourself without the aid of a native speaker.So, why doesn't this pen also provide the pinyin? I have no idea. Why would any English speaker use this pen? I have no idea. How is this pen in any way useful for an English speaker? It's not. How is this supposed to help me? It doesn't.It was truly the worst $200 I have spent in years. Such an incredible disappointment. I bought it so I could read newspapers more efficiently, and I was so excited when I first ordered it, but since all it gives me is the English translation, then it is not truly a dictionary. EVERY Chinese-English dictionary provides pinyin--except this one.So it's actually not a dictionary. A craptionary perhaps!This pen is probably GREAT for Romance languages. But for Chinese--do NOT waste your money. A better solution is Pleco. This pen would have been more efficient due to its design if it had pinyin but since it lacks pinyin, it's useless for me. Pleco is an iPhone app that scans characters and then provides the pinyin AND the pronunciation.
