Doesn't live up to the quality of previous Jak & Daxter titles
What happened here? This Jak & Daxter game for the PSP was developed by High Impact Games, the same developer who created the two awesome Ratchet and Clank games for the PSP. But something went amiss with The Lost Frontier. It doesn't even come close to matching the quality of the two Ratchet and Clank games, and it's hands down the worst Jak & Daxter game to date. Not to say that it's unplayable; it can be quite entertaining in places. But the game as a whole suffers from a lack of polish and sloppy gameplay mechanics. The biggest problems with the game are the camera and using the d-pad to change weapon modes and eco powers. The camera is programmed to switch into preset positions at certain parts in the levels, and this often causes problems. It would have been much better if High Impact had just allowed the player total camera control at all times. Let the player screw it up, not the game itself. The problem with the d-pad is that there are simply too many functions mapped to it, and it's too awkward to use in the heat of combat. The player uses the d-pad to do three things: change weapon modes, change eco powers, and activate an eco power. Having to take your thumb off the analog nub to do this means Jak is a sitting duck to attacking enemies. A much better solution would have been to have a quick select system as in the Ratchet and Clank games. One button pauses the game and brings up a quick select ring with the available weapon modes and eco powers. The player chooses with the analog nub and quickly resumes gameplay. The L and R shoulder buttons could have been used to switch back and forth between a weapon ring and an eco power ring. How somebody didn't think of this is baffling.Another annoying problem is that the game does not display Jak's weapon mode and eco power at all times. The only time that information gets displayed is when the player changes weapon modes and eco power. Every time the player begins engaging an enemy, you have to fiddle with the d-pad to see what abilities you have equipped. It's just a big pain in the butt. The sky combat is fun, but way too easy. The game practically just gives the player everthing. Rather than being the grandiose Jak and Daxter game I was hoping for, The Lost Frontier is little more than a few day's diversion. Worst of all, there's no Ashelin: an unforgiveable crime. Rent this one, or wait until it drops in price.

Meh
I was very reluctant to believe the mediocre reviews this game received since1) I LOVED Daxter on the PSP,2) I liked the PS2 Jak & Daxter Games,3) I like High Impact's Ratchet & Clank game,4) I generally love platforming action-adventure type games, and5) I'm always excited when a promising game is released on the PSP.Well, unfortunately, Jak & Daxter disappointed. It's hard to put my finger on exactly why though. A lot of the traditional platforming and gameplay from early J&D games was there, and those functioned fine. Generally, the game was moderately challenging, and there were some interesting innovations (e.g., the set of Dark Eco powers).Nevertheless, there were some problems with the game that kept making the experience less than it should have been. The entire game suffers from a lack of coherence. There are several different parts of the game: platforming and fighting as Jak, dogfights in the sky, bizarre "Dark Daxter" sequences, and Daxter-disarming-planes quick time minigames. Unfortunately, none of these different gameplay parts are really linked together well. More explanation and smoother transitions from the developer could have made the different parts of the game a bit smoother. It seems like all the parts of the story weren't totally completed when this game was released. Also, while most of the dogfights were really easy, there were occasional difficulty spikes that threw off the normal pacing of the game.Others have complained about the camera controls, but I think this is something you can get used to fairly easily. The control scheme also wasn't the best (as another reviewer pointed out, using your left thumb to switch weapons and Eco powers as well as controlling movement was a poor design decision...nevertheless, that wasn't too bad either). All in all, the Lost Frontier isn't a terrible game, but after seeing how good other, similar games were on the PSP (e.g., Daxter, Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters), it was disappointing that such a promising game didn't quite turn out as good as it could have been.

Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier
I bought this game because I had the first game and while it was fun, I couldn't get very far in it because it was just to difficult. I hate doing the same thing over and over and WILL stop after several times...you crazy people that like to do the same thing thousands of times in a row before you can move forward in a game are NUTS, in my humble opinion! In several reviews on this game, people were complaining that it was too easy...well that sounded like the game for me! Well, it certainly isn't easy, but it isn't as hard as some. I have been able to progress in the game and it has been fun! THANKS to all the people that complained so I could find a game I could play and have some fun with!!! :)

Daxter is much better than Jak and Daxter.
I wouldn't recommend Jak and Daxter because it is much more difficult in regards to forward progress, very frustrating to work so hard and get put back so far. I really like the game Daxter, I think it's more generous on moving forward within the levels.

jak and daxter are awesome!!
I have the whole Jak & Daxter series and play it over and over again, you can learn something new each time. I love the story line and you really get connected with the characters, they almost seam real to you. My PS2 broke and I miss playing those games so much that I'm going to buy a new PS2 just for those games, that's how good they are. This was the first time I bought things from Amazon and I will continue from now on. The items were in great condition and came very quickly. My family have been buying from Amazon for years and told me to try it and now I'm hooked. I'll do all my Christmas shopping there too.

Fun game
Personally I thought the game was fun and different. Takes a little getting used to the controls. I'm more familiar with Daxter as I never played the first three aside from Jak 2 here and there.

Airplanes, guns, and eco.
Jak and Daxter: The Final Frontier is a game for the Playstation 2 and PSP, released in 2009. This review will only reflect my experiences based on the PSP version of the game. -------------STORY-------------The Final Frontier follows the story of Jak, Keira and Daxter on a quest to restore eco to the world. Eco has mysteriously stopped flowing through eco vents around the world, and no one knows why. For some reason.Beyond the premise of the story, everything falls apart rather fast. Without spoiling too much, there are some huge inconsistencies. Jak can no longer become Dark Jak – a trademark of the character – and instead, now Daxter can transform. I honestly don’t understand why Jak can’t transform, as you’d think the same rules would apparently affect him as well. The overall story arc is predictable from the start. You know – attacked by pirates, pirates are really the good guys, good guys who rescue heroes in the beginning are really the villain – kind of deal, and it’s not subtle in doing this what so ever. I could immediately tell what the course of the story was going to be. The general premise disappears entirely for the third act of the game, and the resolution comes at the final mission. It felt so abrupt that they solved the worlds eco problems without much of an actual build up to trying to solve it.That being said, the only character who seems to actually follow the established nature of their character in this game is Daxter. It’s not exactly loyal to the series as a whole. -------------GAMEPLAY-------------Jak and Daxter: The Final Frontier actually surprised me by the time it had run it’s course. While it’s not a game I can see myself returning to multiple times over the years, it’s certainly a game I enjoyed playing. Jak controls surprisingly well on the PSP. Far better than I thought it actually would.Alternating between platforming as Jak, flying vehicles and puzzle-solving as Daxter, the game offers enough variation in gameplay that it remains fun. It has a pseudo open world, allowing you to move from mission to mission. While the platforming was well put together, it didn’t match the other games in the series, and if I’m honest, I enjoyed the flight sections far more. The main meat of the game comes from being able to upgrade and customize any of five available planes. The design on them is great, and there’s a number of different things you can do with them. The flight sections are actually so well controlled and fun to play I was actually dreading the plat forming sections, which weren’t nearly as engaging.Jak has new abilities to compensate for lacking his dark eco powers. These can be used to interact with the environment in multiple ways, such as raising green eco crystals, destroy walls, jump great heights, teleport, or slow down time. It’s an interesting take on the character, but not exactly loyal to his origins.I found the puzzles to be inane and time consuming. While not offering any sort of difficulty and the fact Daxter is almost invincible, I wondered why they made these sections at all. The game could have done without the quicktime events added in. I felt they detracted from the game overall and don’t capture the spirit of challenging mini-games that previous Jak games are known for. I also found jumping in some sections off. It was difficult to judge distances in some sections, essentially when dealing with specific platforms. Jak also doesn’t do much damage to anything even when fully upgraded. Unless you’re using the heaviest guns, enemies can take quite a beating and ammo within the missions themselves is unfortunately scarce. -------------AUDIO & GRAPHICS-------------The music is crisp and clean, and sets a tone that’s different from the previous Jak games. Still, the audio in the regard to the music is great, but other parts of the game suffer. The voice acting is, well..Terrible. Daxter is the sole good voice actor in the entire game. The actors for Jak and Keira have been replaced, and the rest of the cast isn’t compelling or well voice acted at all in comparison to any of the previous games. A huge let down.Graphically speaking, however, the game looks fantastic, and there’s absolutely no slow down on the PSP. I was surprised that a game could look so good on the PSP and play so well. -------------VERDICT-------------Overall, this game isn’t bad. While long time fans will see the story as a scar upon such a well executed series, the game still manages to be fun despite the changes made to it. For the price, it's definitely worth picking up, but unfortunately the game is rather short (it took me five hours to complete it), and there really isn't much challenge to be had beyond the flaws in the combat system. It's not a game you're likely to play more than once, though.

Jak and Daxter's most robust game to date!
This is technically the 5th game in the Jak and Daxter series (there is Jak and Daxter 1, 2, 3, and the Daxter stand alone game, THEN Lost Frontier), and it is superb even on the PSP, granted the graphics are a bit lower than the PS2 version, but it packs quite the punch with a combination of both On-foot and vehicle based gameplay! Definitely the best in the series and a must have for any Jak and Daxter fan!

Good game but not great
Graphis/Sound-----------------Nothing wrong with them. I don't have enough PSP games to say they are really bad or really good.Story------No better or worse than anything in the series. It's good but not why you should play.3 gameplay---------------Jak and Daxter platforming--------------------------------In Jak II and III, he had all of his moves from Jak I but this one does not(though I think some of them would use buttons the PSP does not have). Using echo powers is a bit clumsy since they are mapped to the D-pad. The platforming is good but not great, two levels were on-par with something from Jak III* but that was the only level. Wish the guns powered-up like in Jak III but sadly they don't.* See my "series ranking" at the bottom to understand more.Dogfighting gameplay--------------------------I did not think I would enjoy this as much as I did, it was very well done and felt really nice with the PSP's button layout. (even with one of your guns mapped to triangle). It does get a little repetitive in the end but is still fun.Dark Daxter Sections-------------------------I really enjoyed these, too bad there where only 3(?) of them.Overall thought-------------------Get this one if the price is good but otherwise skip it. Just so you know here is my order ranking:1. Jak and Daxter and the Precursor Legacy2. Jak III3. Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier(game I am reviewing)4. Daxter5. Jak II
