Nature: Elsa's Legacy: The Born Free Story

Elsa and Joy
How I cried when Born Free came out in the movie theaters! I have always thought animals were so much more than we gave them credit. Our Creator doesn't make junk!! Such a beautiful story about the love of Elsa for Joy and George and vice versa! Animals are sooo wonderful and intelligent and can teach us so much if we would only stop abusing them and killing them out of greed and our sick sense of being above all creation! We are NOT! As the Native American teaches us...we are all connected to earth and to each other. We are small compared to the whole of life and we must make room for all creatures and respect and learn about them. I love all creatures and have all of my life! God bless all people like Joy and George Adamson who love them, too, and help us learn just how special Creator made them all!! we have no right to destroy that which we did not create!

EXCELLENT
If you are familiar with "Born Free", whether you read the book, saw the movie or both, this documentary will finally close the last chapter on this fascinating story. Even the re-enactments are flawless (and I'm not a big fan of them). But the original film footage and stills of the Adamsons and the lions is mesmerizing. The fact that Virginia McKenna (Joy Adamson in the movie) narrates and stars in this documentary is what really makes it worthwhile. Her personal perspective and involvement with this story is what makes it so special. The quality of the Blu-ray is as good as it gets. I've watched it three times since I purchased it. Now I'm waiting for "Born Free" to be released in Blu-ray as well.

Well-written and moving
A fascinating story of the first lion to be raised in captivity, and then set free as an adult. The story of Elsa is a book/movie that everyone should read/see at least once.

A Must See
The story of Elsa and what goes on after her death, the good will and the work the Anderson’s started and the tragic way they both died. It is a must see if you loved ‘Born Free’ the movie or the book, or if you saw ‘To Walk With Lions.’ This gives a more in-depth depiction of what went on behind the seen.

Now I have the whole set of this series
God the Father has surely given us humans compassion for his animals. We can enjoy them and how it is that there are people in the world who want nothing more to do than go off killing animals all the time is beyond me

ELSA'S LEGACY
This lovely DVD on Elsa was released in 2011, runs 53 minutes and is in widescreen. The sound and the picture quality is very good, considering a lot of the film is from the old archives. The DVD starts with George Adamson (David Allen) on safari having shot a lioness and brings to the camp 3 lion cubs, as seen in 'Born Free' movie 1966. Virginia Mckenna visits Elsa's grave in Meru. George Adamson's diary and old film footage is used to explain Elsa's story. Joy treated Elsa as her own child and you can first time hear Joy talking about Elsa. Clips of home video by the Adamsons and the 'Born Free' movie and lovely Born Free background music by John Barry, help to narrate the story. Sir David Attenbrough explains his experience of Elsa lying on top of him, as his first introduction to this lioness. Then Joy has a go at George. Joy Adamson in the 'Born Free' movie, is not what Joy was in reality. Sir David says 'Born Free' was a big myth. The DVD tries to reconstruct the Elsa Story upto her death in 1961.You meet Boy, Girl and Ugas lions used in the film. George used to say-'there are good lions and bad lions, but there are no safe lions'. After the movie was over, George looked after these lions at Meru. You meet 'John Bexandale' and 'Tony Fitzjohn', George's assistant for 18 years, who also give their views and love for the 'great man'- George Adamson. Tony's first lion experience was with 'Christian'. You get emotional watching the funerals of Joy Adamson in Nairobi and George Adamson in Kora and I had my tissues handy! George was like a father to all who knew him. You are treated with some old B/W photos and film of George and Joy and some colour pictures and film of them in Kenya. But be warned, there is a short clip of lion shooting and spearing. Virginia Mckenna and Bill Travers, eventually when up to set up the 'Born Free Foundation', which today helps wild animals to live free in the wild. Join them, as there may be only 2,000 lions left in Kenya. We were lucky to stay at ELSA's KOPJES at Meru and JOY's CAMP at Shaba and enjoy this history.A.
