HP 39gs - Great Graphing Calculator
I purchased this for the symbolic capability. The manual is clean and the exercises work. It is easy to understand and a short time is required to learn each capability. The Manual impressed me. Many manuals are poorly written, not written for any audience, contain critical errors, in short, not really intended to be read.I have another calculator from HP that is a graphing calculator it had no printed manual. It has a steep learning curve as a result of the PDF manual where many examples simply do not work. This machine actually gave me the required information to do some work with the older calculator. The symbolic function has many limitations. The one I do not like is the limitation of ONE character per variable. This limits the work you can do where two character variables are used to help you know what they are.Otherwise it is a great machine.

Great calculator for math classes!
I bought this calculator because it is almost $100 CHEAPER than a TI calculator and it basically has all the same functions just you have to learn them. I did not want to shell out a hundred and something dollars for a calculator so I purchased this one for around $40.Like I said this calculator has all the functions as one of those TI calculators, just you have to learn how to use them. The only downside is that in a class full of people who have TI's, it is sort of hard to get help how to enter certain things because you have a different calculator. There are also a couple of improvements that I wish this calculator had, but so far so good! I recommend this to anyone who is looking to save money!

very pleased
I am very pleased with this graphing calculator. I had to buy one for my grandson for school to use in math class. Everywhere I looked they want 50.00 all the way up to 150.00. I did not want to purchase it for that price so I went on the internet and found this one on amazon for only around 30.00. At that price it is doing what he needs to do for his classwork and if it gets lost or stolen I have not invested an amount that will break me. Thank you amazon. HP39GS Graphing Calculator

I highly recommend that if you are going for HP go for ...
The batteries that were pre loaded in the calculator are not working.I had to get new batteries from meijer to switch on my calculator. The calculator was packed in 2009 and the batteries were having a lifetime of five years so quite natural that they would not work.I was not aware of this fact that packaging was done such a long time back.HP is no more manufacturing this model of graphing calculator.HP 50g and HP prime graphing wireless calculator are the only two model HP is manufacturing now.I hope my calculator will be covered under warranty but I am unsure since HP has stopped producing that.I highly recommend that if you are going for HP go for HP 50g or HP Prime since it would be easier to claim warranty and get your calculator fixed in case you encounter any problem with your calculator.

Great deal!
This calculator is worth every penny. It is easy to use, and contains all the functions/abilities that my son needs in his math classes. It can be used with a computer to increase the functionality. It was a great deal!

legibility of new one is not same and not good than old one
It seems not to be genuine product.. I compared this one with my HP39GS purchased 9 years ago. Appearance is very similar to old one. However, as soon as I turned on new one I realized display is different from old one. legibility of new one is not same and not good than old one.. I used about ten years. Is this minor down-graded product to drop price? The price is really good but .... I am not sure.. but it would be good to ask HP sales...

Small review for HP39GS Graphing Calculator
Came on time. Works perfect. Im using windows 7, don't know if it makes a difference but I had to go the the website its self to download the driver for it. Not a complaint, just took longer to hook up to the PC. I had a little trouble using it, only because I'm use to Texas Instrument. BIG book on it. Once you read it and mess around it's rather easy to use.

Beware of underlying software issues
Every positive thing mentioned about this calculator in other reviews is correct, and I completely agree with them. It comes with a well-written and detailed manual, and the calculator itself is very user-friendly and has many useful functions that make the TI-84 seem prehistoric in comparison. However, this calculator is not reliable at all. HP does not support this product anymore. There is no warranty of any kind. The last date it was manufactured was 2006, if that says anything. After a little less than a year, the HP39gs started freezing randomly. The only way to unfreeze it is to remove the batteries. Now, the calculator will not start at all. I have my AP Calculus exam in a month and everything I have learned to do on the HP39gs must be re-learned on a TI.I have tried talking to HP tech support about it, and that is a nightmare in itself. You will spend hours trying to figure out how to fix an issue if one arises, and I don't think it's worth it. Also, if you purchase this calculator, expect to be on your own during any math class when the teacher explains how to do everything using a TI.I'd rather pay 100 dollars more and get the TI-89 Titanium than have to go through what I went through with this calculator.

Dead on Arrival
Bought new, wouldn't power on even after changing the batteries and attempting to reset it. Seems solidly built, and was fairly cheap, so would probably have been good if it had worked.

Perfetto!!

It's a Hewlett Packard - the best there is.
Hewlett Packard - HP-39GS GRAPHIC CALCULATOR FR HP-39GS After many years with TI calculators and a few Casios and a disappointing Sharp - it was time to find a machine that would fit the bill in my day to day engineering and part-time maths/programming tinkering.HP have tried to compete with the huge market space occupied by TI with their classroom / teaching aids and have succeeded to a smaller extent. I have found to the TIs over complicated and somewhat overly student orientated - if not more than a little patronising with their manuals. The HP-39GS pitches in at a fraction of the price AND comes with a USB cable and all the software to get going. (XP only - the Windows 7 drivers are available on-line)This model is the last model in the verical line-up that uses CAS and not RPN. RPN is superior but is a pain for day to day use for the uninitiated. The HP40 and up have RPN. This HP-39GS comes with a quick start manual, CD batteries and the all important USB link (although at nearly 6 feet long is more than ample). Amazingly it has a ARM Samsung processor running a 75 Mhz. This run rings around TI but it's crippled - It has to emulate the old Saturn processor for backwards compatibility with previous models - which is a real shame. If you want to lift the hood and program in low level / LiSP or the much vaunted & promised "C" is will be blindingly quick. There is enough processing power here to put a man on Mars and get him back.HP have a wealth of software on line in the form of tutorials, "aplets" and programs. It's easy to get started and the display is clear and unfussy. The keyboard is a vast improvement on the HP-38 with an intuitive layout. The TIs are fussy and very difficult to navigate in comparison. Conclusion ? Well, if your are a student (particularly in the states) the TI is mandatory because thay are approved and TI have bought themselves into the curriculum. In the UK I don't know but I guess it is a similar policy. HP states the the 39GS is approved but I would check with the authorities before parting with the cash.If you are an architect / civil engineer then the hp-40 upwards is best because of the functionality in terms of symbolics. The 39-GS is well rounded and well specified for the cash: it comes in at a fraction of the cost of TIs and best of all; is a HP.If I had any gripes? Well its easy to drop because of the slippy texture, TI inspired sliding hard case and rounded edges - but it's built like a tank - (I did say it was HP). The display auto-powers off after 5 minutes which is a little irritating at first and it's a little heavy on juice if you use the IrDA port - but thats there for the kids. In reality you'll link it to your PC with a cable. TI have the edge on the PC connectivity software but there is an Aplet development kit (XP only) online if you search for Aplet ADK.My advice ? Buy one - you will never outgrow it or be disappointed and there's always the kudos with having a HP badge on a calculator - it's a proper investment.
