Product description The TrackHat clip head tracker brings new technology to head tracking in PC gaming. The TrackHat clip is powered by a 1.8 metre long USB cable, which can be plugged into your PC, or any powered USB port. It is also fully compatible with all TrackIR sensors, making it a great TrackIR pro clip alternative. It uses the same simple 3 infrared light technology to provide accurate 6 degree of freedom head tracking, without visual interference, drift, lag, or other errors that plague gyroscopic based head trackers. Works straight out of the box.
OK, for those in any doubt or unsure if this product is 'any good', let me start by saying it does exactly what I expected, without any dramas or issues at all. The software (not included but a website link is supplied on the instructions) installed correctly and controlled the head tracking without any further setup. The default curves are as good as anything I've managed manually, and spot on for Flight Simulator X (Steam Edition).I have used my set with FSX:SE without any issues. If FSX crashes to desktop it loses sight of the headtracking software when you restart it, but that's an FSX issue, not the fault of the tracker. It's very accurate and sensitive - a massive improvement over Facetrack Noir which I was using before. The real bonus is that I can now use head tracking with the room lights down instead of having a lamp in my face. If I look away from the screen, the software locates me again immediately when I return. The tracking has been rock solid in the time I've been using it, with no evidence of the behaviour reported by other users. Just follow the instructions on setting up the camera (there's a video on the website) and it works perfectly. Also remember that the LEDs require power, so you need to plug into a powered USB hub or socket. The camera is really good, and has a manual zoom if you sit far away from your screen. If you want a headtracking system that works and doesn't cost a fortune, then just buy this.So why have I only given it four stars?Well, for your forty-five quid, what you actually get is a £12 Sony Playstation camera with the lens filter removed, a 3D-printed head clip with three infra-red LEDs powered off a USB cable, and a modified version of some free, open-source software. It's all packed in a nice box with some colour-printed instructions but it's very 'cottage industry' and doesn't feel like great value. Yes, it's a fraction of the price of a TrackIR set, but it's still expensive for what you actually get. On the plus side, the tracking clip is pretty robust, unlike the flimsy TrackIR thing.Because the camera is a Playstation item, there are no Microsoft drivers for it. The instructions direct you to a link to a driver saved on a MEGA cloud drive, which frankly looks dodgy and unprofessional. It does work though. Including a CD ROM with the driver and software would have been far more reassuring. Even a download from a passworded web page would be better than the current offering. If I could be bothered, I could make something similar for half the price. However, like most people, I can't be bothered and I don't actually mind paying the asking price for someone else to do the work. Just remember that you are basically paying someone £45 to cobble together some free software, a Playstation camera and a few LEDs.It is worth noting that you will receive a RIGHT HAND clip by default. I didn't notice this, and I would actually have preferred a left-hand clip as the cable & mike for my headset is on the left, so now I have cables on both sides of my head.I would say that Trackhat seems to have a bit of a PR problem at the moment. A dead forum with lots of unanswered questions, poor feedback and a general sense of not caring about their customers. Well, I honestly don't have any issues with the item I received. I'm happy with it and I might buy a hat to use if I don't want to wear my headset.

Great alternative to TrackIR
Great alternative to TrackIR. Not any more effort to set up than TrackIR and works nicely. It does need regular recalibration if the lighting in the room changes significantly, but that's easy enough to do. Although it may be implied from the official instructions you need to purchase some third-party software to get this working, you can get hold of a free version with TrackHat.
